How to Play the Christmas El Gordo Raffle
The draw takes place annually on 22 December and is broadcast live throughout Spain. With more than 2.9 million prizes available, Christmas El Gordo offers far more winning opportunities than most lottery games around the world.
Christmas El Gordo raffle tickets are assigned unique five digit numbers ranging from 00000 to 99999. Each ticket is divided into 10 equal shares, known as decimos. Each share carries the same ticket number and entitles the holder to a proportional share of any prize won.
Available ticket numbers and shares are displayed on the screen. You cannot purchase more shares than are available for a particular number. You can choose to:
- Purchase a single share of a ticket number,
- Purchase multiple shares of the same ticket number to increase the value of any prize won, or
- Purchase shares across multiple ticket numbers to increase your chances of holding a winning number.
Simply use the (+) and (−) buttons to select the number of shares you wish to purchase.
Prize Sharing Example
If ticket number 12345 wins a prize of €100,000 and you own 4 out of 10 shares, you would receive €40,000.
The more shares you own of a winning ticket number, the larger your prize!
How the Christmas El Gordo Draw Works
The Christmas El Gordo draw is unlike any other lottery in the world and follows a unique format that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
Two large drums are used during the draw, a Number Drum and a Prize Drum
The Number Drum contains 100,000 wooden balls, each displaying a unique lottery number between 00000 and 99999.
The Prize Drum contains wooden balls representing the various prizes available in the draw.
Throughout the event, one ball is drawn from each drum simultaneously. The selected number and corresponding prize are announced and famously sung by the students of San Ildefonso School, a tradition that has become synonymous with Christmas in Spain.
If your ticket number matches a winning number drawn during the event, you win the prize associated with that draw. If you own shares or decimos of a winning ticket, you receive the corresponding proportion of the prize.

A Note on Tax for Christmas El Gordo Raffle Winnings
Under current Spanish lottery regulations, prizes are generally exempt from taxation up to €40,000.
Any prize amount exceeding €40,000 is currently subject to a 20% Spanish lottery tax, applied only to the portion of the prize above the exempt threshold.
For example, if you were to win €100,000, you would get €88,000 after the Spanish lottery tax was applied. The first €40,000 is tax exempt, the remaining €60,000 is taxed at a rate of 20% (so €12,000 to the Spanish Government), leaving €48,000 in taxed winnings. This plus the €40,000 tax-exempt winnings would mean you collect €88,000 under current rules.
